Princes Park   1842 - 2024

The Henge

Rebuilding Princes Park Henge platform we need your help:

In 2014 FOPP worked with young people from Unity Youth Centre to create a wooden Henge in Princes Park. It was designed by the young people and built by a well-known Welsh sculptor John Merrill. https://johnmerrill.co.uk/

It is a unique installation, with nothing similar anywhere in Merseyside. Recently though, parts of the platform have started to rot and have been declared unsafe. FOPP are working closely with the Council and with local councillors, to replace it.

The Henge is used by many young people, by drumming groups, yoga groups and people celebrating Eid. Families and groups enjoy picnics at the Henge, and it has been part of several celebrations for the summer solstice. People come from elsewhere in Liverpool and beyond to enjoy it. During the visit of the Giants to Princes Park in 2018 dream catchers made by FOPP and Unity were hung from it. The platform, which faces the sunrise at the summer solstice, is a focal point, as it is raised up, as requested originally by the young people. Rebuilding it will allow people to enjoy this unique structure for many years to come. The existing platform will be removed, and John Merrill will rebuild the platform from oak. FOPP is now fundraising for the rebuilding, which will cost £3700. We need your help as we hope to rebuild later this spring. Please give what you can.
